Quick rundown of revenue models.
Here’s a quickfire list of possible revenue models that you can use to monetise your blog. Over the coming weeks, we’ll take a closer look at the pros and cons of each.
- Contextual advertising, a la Google Adsense & Yahoo! Publisher Network
- Advertising networks lots around, but many of them tend to push those crappy smiley faces (or should that be ’smiley faeces’) ads to your site.
- Direct avertising, or selling your own space direct to advertisers.
- Sponsorship – on a post by post basis, maybe? As in “this post was brought to you by…”
- Affiliate programs too many to name.
- Donations, a la Kottke.
- Subscriptions, such as John Gruber’s.
- Micropayments – paying a nominal fee through your mobile to read a post on a post-by-post basis – anyone doing this?
- Selling merchandise – lots of people doing this, including Darren through CafePress.
- Licensing/selling your content to other providers – is there a way to do this and maintain the same content on your blog?
- Getting paid to post on a particular subject – hmmm, bit controversial, this one.
- Spamming and llink farms – c’mon, be original.
- Starting your own related online store – imagine you blog about clogs… you could tag an online store to the backend of your clog blog that sells clogs to your readers.
- Selling your services – if you’re getting a good response from your blog, you could sell your writing and design services to other individuals or companies who are looking to start a blog.
- and lastly, Selling up – any idea who we’re talking about?
I’ll keep adding to this as I pick up more ideas. Anyone else got any innovative ones they want to share? Thought not…. :o)
