In 2002, Merck & Co. Inc. (disclosure: I’m a former contract employee) started building a vaccine production facility in Durham, North Carolina. Based at Treyburn Industrial Park, Merck had to develop specific training programs in partnership with Durham Technical Community College in order to have skilled workers for the plant. Hiring begins in 2006.

The vaccine production plant is one that is sorely needed especially now that we are facing a potential bird flu epidemic. If you’re considering a study/career path in healthcare, vaccine development is an area that needs people.
