Healthcare Doesn’t Take a Holiday
For several years, I worked as a pharmacy clerk every Christmas and other major holidays. It was a great way to earn overtime and also help my co-workers who had families and children. Fortunately, my parents understood.
Karla Jessup, a nurse on the medical-surgical floor, demonstrates her love and compassion by working Christmas Eve and Christmas day:
Sickness and the need for treatment and care don’t take holidays. It’s an on-going thing.
On Christmas, we tend to pull together and make things a bit more cheery. If I had a loved one in the hospital on Christmas day, I would want to see a smiling face coming into the room. I think that’s how most of the nurses look at it. It’s not humbug and gloom. It lets the patients know that we care about them and we’re there for them.
How do you feel about working Christmases and holidays?
