DR. MARYANNE M. HYLAND, associate professor of management at ADELPHI UNIVERSITY: “The notion of work/family balance may sound ideal for working mothers; however, ‘balance’ will likely come with costs, such as less than the desired amount of time with their children and/or less than the ideal amount of time at work. Some working moms don’t see the trade-offs as being worth it. Employers can play a large role in retaining working mothers by establishing formal and informal supports. Basic workplace supports, such as flexible work arrangements, may minimize the trade-offs so moms decide to keep working.” Hyland is a former benefits analyst for Fortune 500 companies and an expert on accommodating women in the workforce.
