Healthcare Job Profile: Health Information Technology

By Hsien-Hsien Lei on April 5 2006

DeVry University will begin offering a new online health information management (HIM) technical specialty within its bachelor of science in technical management (BSTM) degree program beginning in May 2006.

The curriculum for DeVry University’s new HIM technical specialty will focus on:

  • Health data uses and content
  • Health information systems design and planning
  • Management of services and resources
  • Project management
  • Change management
  • Budgeting
  • Knowledge of institution wide health information systems
  • As well as ethics, motivation and leadership.

Expected starting salaries for health information technologists range between $30,000 and $50,000. After five years of experience, many are earning up to $75,000.

If you’re interested in health information technology (IT), check out the IBM Healthnex sponsored Blogposium where participating bloggers will be contributing to The Clinical Informatics Wiki focusing on issues in health IT.

I’m trying to figure out if I have enough knowledge and expertise to contribute. On top of which, my research is hampered lately because my broadband crashed. Excuses, excuses,….

No more excuses! Take advantage of the healthcare IT boom today: enroll in a course, read The Clinical Informatics Wiki, and think about how technology is affecting healthcare as we know it.
