Getting Experience in Healthcare

By Hsien-Hsien Lei on April 6 2006

Healthcare has been my passion since I was in grade school and as soon as I was able to join the local hospital’s junior volunteer program, I began to accrue healthcare experience. From there, I was able to observe a great deal of what goes on inside a hospital and soon realized that a career in healthcare is hard work and not quite as glamorous as some may think.

If you’re too old to be a junior volunteer, here are some other ways for you to get some healthcare experience that will look good on your resume as well as open your eyes to reality. From Albion College Liberal Arts Institute for Pre-Medical and Health Care Studies (more details at their site):

  • Hospitals (human or animal) and Nursing Homes
  • Private Offices/Clinics
  • Animal Care Facilities
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Competency-Evaluated Nurse Aide
  • Hospice and Home Health Care
  • Peer Counseling

I am a firm believer that if you’re having trouble finding a paying position, take any kind of career-building experience you can get even if it doesn’t pay. Of course, your time may be limited if you don’t have other financial support, but if you find yourself sitting around waiting for a phone call, pick yourself up and do something, anything until a paying job comes through.
